However, she’s far from ordinary—Daisy is a conversational AI chatbot created by British telecom company O2 to combat fraud. Her job? To trick phone scammers into thinking they’re talking to a real person and waste as much of their time as possible.
Unveiled this month, Daisy highlights the dual role of AI in fighting and facilitating online scams. According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, consumers lost over $1 trillion to scams last year. The FBI reported a record $12.5 billion in losses from online scams in 2023, but AI also helped the U.S. Treasury recover $1 billion in check fraud in the last fiscal year.
Daisy’s conversations, full of rambling stories and false information, have kept fraudsters on calls for up to 40 minutes, according to O2. Using a custom language model, she autonomously interacts with scam callers in real time, with her phone numbers circulated online to bait scammers. Developed with London ad agency VCCP, her voice was inspired by a staff member’s grandmother to exploit scammers’ biases toward the elderly.
Last year, Virgin Media O2 blocked more than £250 million in fraudulent transactions.
“With scammers running full-time call centers targeting Brits, we’re urging vigilance,” said Murray Mackenzie, Virgin Media O2’s fraud director.
